Offers and Funnels: Why Scaling Stalls After the Click

Clicks but no sales: offers and funnels before you scale

Short answer: when ads get clicks but sales do not follow, the problem is usually after the click: the offer, the landing page or the follow-up. Before you raise budget, map the path from ad to page to conversion to follow-up, find the step where most people drop, and fix that first. Make sure the page repeats the ad’s promise, test the offer (bundles, trials, guarantees) before the budget goes up, track every step including add to cart and lead stages, and stop sending paid traffic to pages that were never built to convert it.

This guide is for brands spending $100,000 or more a month whose ad metrics look fine but whose revenue does not move with spend. It is built from what we see on growth strategy calls and in account audits.

Signs the funnel, not the ads, is capping your spend

  • Good CTR, no add to cart. People like the ad and leave the page. The ad and the page do not match.
  • Cost per lead looks fine, sales do not. The form converts, but the leads never become revenue.
  • New campaigns cost twice as much per order. In one e-commerce audit, 47.8% of spend sat in new campaigns at €19.35 an order, against €9.54 in the proven ones.
  • Every test feels like a coin flip. One founder told us: “Ideas are plenty, choosing the right ones is hard.”
  • Pages take weeks to change. “Even in a good scenario, it takes them one to two weeks to build a page.” Slow pages mean slow learning.

Map the path: ad, page, conversion, follow-up

Step What to check What usually breaks
Ad Which promise and which audience the ad speaks to The ad promises one thing, the page talks about another
Landing page Does it repeat the ad’s promise in the first screen, load fast on a phone and ask for one action? Traffic lands on the homepage, a generic category or, with Performance Max URL expansion, on job ads or the wrong language
Conversion Is every step tracked: view, add to cart, checkout, purchase, form, qualified lead? Add to cart is not tracked, so the biggest drop-off is invisible; one lead is counted five times as it changes stage
Follow-up How fast leads are called, how carts are recovered, what happens after the first order Leads go cold, carts are left behind, nobody owns the step
Funnel map: ad with one promise, page with one action, every conversion step tracked, follow-up owned

Fix the step with the biggest drop first. A 20% lift on the weakest step is usually worth more than any bid change.

Offers: test them before the budget goes up

“One offer for everyone” is one of the most common caps we see between $10K and $100K a month, and it gets more expensive above that. When the offer does not convert a cold stranger, more spend just buys more of the same no.

  • Test offer structure, not just price: bundles, trials, guarantees, first-order offers and payment terms.
  • Split offers by product, audience or market once one offer stops scaling.
  • Show the offer in the ad’s first frame, with the old price struck through, the new price and the deadline.
  • Never pre-announce a sale. People wait, and conversion rate drops the same day.
  • Have a plan B offer ready for every product on promotion, and offer ads approved by the 25th for a promotion that starts on the 1st.
  • Know the economics: payback and margin by product or offer, so you know which offer deserves more money.

Landing pages for paid traffic

  • One page per promise. The headline repeats the ad.
  • Fast on a phone. Most paid traffic is mobile.
  • One action. Remove the menu and the second call to action.
  • Proof near the button: reviews, numbers, guarantees.
  • Test on the paths with the most spend first. That is where a small lift moves the most money.
  • For Performance Max, control final URL expansion, so paid traffic never lands on pages that were not built to sell.

Lead funnels: count the right thing

For SaaS and B2B, the form is not the finish line. Common problems we see:

  • The platform is told about every form fill, so it finds more people who fill forms, not more people who buy.
  • A conversion fires every time a lead changes stage in the CRM, so one lead is counted up to five times.
  • Nobody owns the whole path: marketing hands over leads, sales says they are bad, and no one fixes the middle.

Send qualified leads and closed revenue back to the ad platforms as offline conversions, count each lead once, and judge campaigns on pipeline and CAC payback.

What to fix first

  1. Track every step of the path, including add to cart and lead stages, against your backend.
  2. Find the step with the biggest drop.
  3. Make the page repeat the ad’s promise and load fast on a phone.
  4. Test the offer before you test bids.
  5. Only then raise the budget, in steps, while marginal CAC holds.

How we run it at Defined Chase

On a Growth Map Call we look at the path from ad to revenue and find the step that caps your spend. If it is the funnel or the offer, the plan says so in writing, with the tests in order. We brief landing pages and offers, wire tracking for every step and run the media against the numbers that matter: new customers, revenue and payback.

FAQ

Why do my ads get clicks but no sales?

Usually because the page does not repeat the ad’s promise, loads slowly on a phone, asks for too much, or the offer is not strong enough for a cold visitor. Check add to cart and checkout rates by landing page before changing the ads.

What should I test first: the ad, the page or the offer?

The step with the biggest drop. If CTR is good and add to cart is poor, test the page and the offer. If CTR is poor, test the creative angle.

How do I test an offer without losing money?

Test it on a part of the budget with a clear stop rule, for example a fixed test budget and a cost per purchase limit, and compare against the current offer on the same traffic.

Should paid traffic go to the homepage?

Rarely. Send it to a page built for that ad’s promise, with one action and proof next to the button.

Do funnels matter more than tracking?

You need tracking first, so you can see where the funnel leaks. Then fix the leak. Both come before raising budget.
